What is Short Bandy?

Bandy is the biggest winter sport next to hockey. But nations in central Europe do not have large enough ice rinks to play on the big field (100x60m). Short Bandy is a variant of Bandy which can be played on ice hockey rinks. It is characterized by its speed and its unique rules. Four players per team plus goalies try to score into Bandy style goals of the dimensions 250x210cm (icehockey goals are 180x120cm). Short Bandy has corner strokes, goal kicks, penalty shots and free strokes like Bandy. But there is no offside rule, creating more space for attacks.

Of course it’s played with Bandy sticks, a Bandy ball and checking is not allowed. It requires good stick handling and shooting skills and a good eye for the opponents and team mates.

Therefore it’s fast, open and fun as Bandy, and you will love it!

For long Rink bandy has been the natural alternative to big ice bandy. In the northern countries in the world, like Canada, USA, Sweden, Finland, Norway and Russia, bandy is the biggest wintersport next to hockey. But nations in the middle or south of Europe with no winter climate, their alternative is to play on hockey rinks.

A few years ago the Czech Bandy Federation wanted to play more like bandy even on a hockey rink. They started to develop Short bandy. One ambition was to find a way of playing bandy on hockey rinks to prepare for bandy on big ice. After many tests, the Czech Bandy started playing and training in “Short bandy”.
